Chiles Rural Traditions: Puro Caballo ~ Traditional Chilean Horsemen...

Puro Caballo's horse-breeding ranch was our excursion choice when we landed in Valparaiso, our final destination during our South America and Chilean Fjords Viking cruise. The Viking Jupiter put into port and we took advantage of the great weather. The sun was shining and it was really warm!

We drove to Puro Caballo and saw an introduction to the traditional Chilean horsemen. They are similar to our American cowboys. While enjoying a glass of wine or pisco sour, we watched a demonstration of a Chilean rodeo.

Here are some moments of their demonstration! Enjoy these magnificent creatures and their talented riders!

Quintessence Alpaca Farm....Running with the Alpacas!

Cute, timid, furry adorable creatures abounded around me as that fled their pens to run in the large corral. It was a joy to watch them playfully jump, run, and roll around on the ground in an effort to scratch that itch. Nibbling at the grass was interesting to watch. They don't rip it out the ground, but act like a lawn mower and preserve the root for future feasting.

The corrals and pens were filled with mothers and their young babies. Babies are born every day at the farm during spring and summer. Their gestation period is around 11 months. Timing is critical because they do not want the babies born in the fall or winter because the weather needs to be warm for them to survive.

We disembarked our ship, the Viking Jupiter, and had over twelve hours before our flight would return us home. Luckily, I found a great guide in Sean, from Chile Dream Tours through Viator. Pacific Treasures: Penguins and Alpacas was such a delight!

Over the next nine hours we toured the Pacific region and observed Penguins from a distance, had a lovely lunch, and visited the Quintessence Alpaca Farm.

Enjoy our moments with the curious Alpacas....perhaps this is will be on your bucket list!

Happy travels,
