Visiting London is always a delight. This was our second visit to the London area and this trip we decided to explore Greenwich. Greenwich is a lovely community full of shops, restaurants, very friendly people, and many special sites to see! Everything is within walking distance and I managed to walk over 5 miles!
Our day began with a stroll to the Thames and much to our surprise we saw our Viking Sky anchored in the Thames. It looks like we'll be tendering in when our cruise begins. We had a special tour arranged at 12:30 p.m. with the Royal Greenwich Tours and our guide was Muhsin from Cyprus.
But before we started our tour, Justin and I had a lovely lunch at Byron up on their terrace overlooking the Thames near the Tunnel entrance and Greenwich Pier.
Our first stop after lunch was with our guide and a steep walk up to the Royal Observatory. We saw many clocks and the famous Harrison time keepers and of course the famous Prime Meridian! There are lovely views from atop the hill overlooking the Thames and London.
Following our steep decline down the hill we saw the Royal National Maritime Museum and Lord Nelson's coat, the one in which he was killed.
Then we traversed to the Queen's House and enjoyed a few rooms as well as the lovely tulip stairs.
The Cutty Sark Tea Clipper was interesting. They have the ship supported with internal structures so that it's not resting on the keel so as not to damage the boat.
Our final tour stop was at the Royal Naval College Painted Hall Ceiling. This was on Justin's must-see list. The ceiling is being restored and there is scaffolding everywhere. There are a lot of steps to go up and only one lift/elevator. The elevator must be booked ahead because only one person can use it on the tour. Unfortunately, I was unable to mount all the stairs and we were unaware of the lift requirements. But Justin got some amazing photos and I managed to listen to the guide's commentary while I stayed below.
As we were returning back to our hotel for the evening, we stopped to have dinner at the Rivington Grill. We chatted with a lovely couple from Kent and Justin picked up a few new phrases that seemed to delight him. Fish and chips were delicious and our desserts were amazing! I had the Eton Mess! This was a mixture of strawberries, meringue, and whipped cream! Justin had a Chocolate pudding with caramel ice cream. We both satisfied our sweet tooth for the day.
All in all, it was great day to tour Greenwich...be sure to watch my little video which features the highlights I mentioned.
Tomorrow another adventure awaits! Thanks for stopping by!
